On Saturday 29th August the Lisbon International Swim Team, more affectionately known as the Lisbon Bullsharks, had its first official swim meet against the Rota Tiburones and the Kaiserslautern Kingfish in Rota Spain. Those of you that have been following the development of The Bullsharks or attending our fundraisers will understand just how far we have come in the last six months. The team has evolved from a group of swimmers and their parents that were interested in competitive swimming to a fully fledged member of the European Forces Swim League with a strong team identity and an even stronger team spirit!
We fielded a team of 13 swimmers who entered an incredible 39 individual and 4 relays races. Despite sometimes having as little as 10 minutes to recover between events, we came away with an amazing 12 first places, 11 second places and 7 third places! The Bullsharks certainly made a big splash in more ways than one and both the Tiburones and the Kingfish were most surprised at the competitiveness of our swimmers.
The many hours of hard pool work, the careful mentoring and guidance from the coaching staff and the dedication of the board members and parents have certainly paid dividends. We couldn’t have done it without the tremendous support provided by JHQ Lisbon through MWAC funding assistance and the use of the NATO pool while our usual training facility was closed for the summer and we would like to thank each and every one of you that has helped get the team off the ground.
If this article has caught your interest and you have a son or daughter between the ages of 6 and 19 who would like to get involved in a great activity that will promote long-term fitness and foster the values of teamwork, determination, sportsmanship and international community spirit, then The Bullsharks could be just the ticket. It also presents a great opportunity to travel with the team on trips to various locations throughout Europe. Most importantly, getting involved with The Lisbon Bullsharks will give the entire family the prospect of making life-long friendships with others that share the same values and interests.
